Hammer your colours to the mast means to stand firm and commit fully to your individual and team values when face with adversity. The saying originates from naval warfare, whereby if a ship was under attack and refused to surrender, it might nail its colours to the mast. This was a bold signal of defiance, as the flag could no longer be lowered to signal surrender.
